All employers are responsible for workers. They have to protect them against safety and health hazards while at work. A worker should always understand all the potential hazards that appear. He can refuse the work in the event they think it is too dangerous. The workers also have the responsibility to work completely safely with all the hazardous materials.

Main Workplace Hazard Types
- Physical hazards – These are by far the most common of the workplace hazards. They are present in most workplaces. Some common examples include unguarded machinery, frayed electrical cords, loud noises, ladder work, spills, heights, scaffolds, tripping hazards and exposed moving parts.
- Chemical hazards – They appear when being exposed to chemical preparations during work. Common examples include fumes, vapors, solvents, cleaning products, gasses and flammable materials.
- Ergonomic hazards – They will appear when the work type puts the body in a position that is strenuous. These are hard to identify since the results will not immediately appear. Common examples include workstations or chairs that are improperly adjusted, awkward movements, repetitive movements and frequent lifting.
- Biological hazards – They will come when working with infectious plant material, animal material or even people. Common examples include bodily fluids, viruses, bacteria, bird droppings and even insect bites.
Poor Work Practices
In most cases the hazards are created by having really poor work practices. The number of examples that can be offered is really high, with the following being more often met than what you may think:
- Unsafe speed operation or safe work practice violation.
- Using tools and machinery without the necessary authority.
- Using equipment or tools that are defective – Alternatively, using them in a totally unsafe way.
- Disabling or removing guards or different safety devices present on equipment or machinery.
- Crowding, not balancing or overloading materials – Alternatively, handling them in an unsafe way.
- Using body or hands instead of push sticks or tools.
- Improperly using the safety devices or the protective equipment.
- Working or standing under suspended shafts, open hatches, scaffolds or loads.
- Creating unhealthy, unsanitary or unsafe conditions through improper personal hygiene, smoking or poor workplace maintenance.
Report The Hazards As Soon As Possible
All people present at the workplace are responsible for making sure that working environment is healthy and safe. There are hazards that will pose a completely immediate danger. Others will only become apparent at a later point in time. However, all should be fixed. When you notice hazards that appear, they need to be reported and assessed. As an employer, workplace inspections are necessary to guarantee hazard prevention. These should be regularly done to prevent illnesses and injuries. Workplace inspections should always include the following, among other specifics:
- Listening to all the concerns of the supervisors or the workers.
- Understanding all tasks and jobs.
- Determining the causes of identified hazards.
- Identifying potential and existing hazards.
- Monitoring all hazard controls.
- Recommending necessary corrective actions.
